Background

As a child, Max Thorn grew up in a household with varying numbers of young eevees and two pairs of their evolutions (two espeons, a leafeon, and a sylveon). While he wasn't permitted to become attached to any of the kits (they were contracted prior to their eggs being laid), Max was promised an eevee of his own once he became an adult and could stand on his own merits. He often spent time on the beaches near Sandbar Harbour, particularly summer nights, when he was permitted to stay up late enough to see the stars. During the school year, however, Émelie and Basile Thorn, his parents, insisted he utilized a programmable telescope.

About a month after he turned 15, the discovery of a definitive link between some pokémon and the moon was announced. Max was, consequently, fascinated by Dark & Fairy-type pokémon, and so his parents sponsored him to the Masonic Carpenters' University in Scale Mount. While there, Max double-majored in pokémon studies and electronics engineering. Shortly after his sixteenth birthday, however, he received a letter warning him that his parents had gone into hiding and that he shouldn't go looking for them; this coincided with Team Jaeger's rise into, and cementing of, political power in the Amoda region.

Max completed the theoretical portion of his studies at 18, and was sent off to Metro Beach to obtain his trainer's license. ""All the book knowledge in the world is useless next to direct observations and empirical evidence supporting the conclusions you reach,"" to quote one of his professors. She'd tucked a flower behind one of his ears, much to his embarrassment. He left it there, however, when he discovered that the flower was actually a pokémon…specifically, a flabébé.
