Session 17

The next morning dawns without incident. The exposed wiring from last night has been patched - somehow the repair crew must have come and left without waking anyone.
Anna Tommize ducks out on packing up camp to check on the Voltorb.
Off in the forest, two voltorbs - still stuffed from their feast - groggily roll into each other and explode, waking anyone not yet awake.
Breakfast is sizzling away on the camp stove. It's the usual fixings, naturally.
Anna Tommize gasps, putting both hands over her mouth.
Anna Tommize sadly saunters back to camp.
Tim peers in their direction. "I guess they really want an excuse to sleep in."
Jack is scuffling with Sandy over his breakfast, while Sneeze more calmly eats pokemon food beside them.
Esme is roused by the explosion, apparently have fallen asleep in the middle of tinkering. Gervais is nestled on her head.
Sam Spade eats quietly. Malta debates stealing from Jack and/or Sandy, but she's not quick enough.
Jack Layfield: "That's my omelette you unradical thief!"
[OOC] Sam Spade: As in, she's not quick enough to even give it a shot. She's not gonna try.
Sandy scampers away triumphantly with omelette in it's mouth,
[OOC] Sam Spade: Also, calling Sandy unradical is cold blooded, man.
Anna Tommize: "Hey guys…"
Max Thorn already has a replacement sizzling away in the pan.
[OOC] WC GM: No comment about the blood temperature of reptilian pokemon.
[OOC] WC GM: Or burrowing ones
Sam Spade: "Good morning, Anna."
Esme: "Morning!"
Jack sighs melodramatically. "Why must my pokemon be too awesome for pokemon food…."
Max Thorn: "Comes from slipping them tidbits on the sly."
Tim: "We've been making good time. I think we'll make it to Wirehold this afternoon."
Anna Tommize: "Morning…"
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "Wirehold, huh…?"
Max Thorn: "Should do, yes."
Sam Spade: "Yup."
Jack Layfield: "Righteous! We're moving fast!"
Anna Tommize chews on her tongue as she runs her hand through Meeps wool to calm down.
The terrain on this route is, at least, more varied than the prior two. Foundry Town was kind of at the edge of a desert, but by now there is a forest off to one side, the coast always on the other. Ahead looks like grass and scrublands. And, of course, the route itself is atop one giant cable run, and thus naturally clear of overgrowth.
Tim: "Looking forward to getting home, Anna?"
Anna Tommize: "…No. Not at all."
Meeps rubs up against Anna, sensing her anxiety.
Tim blinks. "Ehh?"
Sam Spade: "Yeah, Anna's got a pretty conflicted relationship with her mom."
Anna Tommize: "Ish…I-I mean, it is not a place I wish to be."
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "I gots t'…gots t'speak right. OK."
Anna Tommize exhales.
Anna Tommize: "Respectshully…fully…I do not w-wish to visit this place."
Anna Tommize looks stiff as a board.
Tim: "Oh. W-well…it's too late to cancel the lecture, but we can just get through there. Maybe your family won't even notice."
Anna Tommize: "Yeah…"
Anna Tommize: "Maybe I can find a hotel…"
Anna Tommize brightens up a bit.
Sam Spade: "Can we? I thought we needed to visit the Gym…"
Tim: "Only if you wanted to inspect that engine."
Tim: "Or get the badge."
Anna Tommize is crestfallen.
Anna Tommize: "O-oh…"
Esme: "And ask about the source, and check on the ship wreckage, and…"
Esme: "A-ah! But I'm sure it'll be fine, Anna!"
Anna Tommize: "Well. In that case, this one must practice speaking r-respectf-f-fully."
Anna Tommize nods.
Jack Layfield: "Screw that!"
Anna Tommize goes white as a ghost.
There is the rumbling of an engine ahead, approaching. A car appears around a bend.
Jack Layfield: "Speak however you like!"
Anna Tommize: "D-dun say that! Myeep!"
Sam Spade: "Jack's got a point."
Sam Spade: "Talk how you want."
Sam Spade: "If your mom has a problem with it-"
Sam Spade hesitates.
Anna Tommize straightens up and turns to face the car. Anna forces a smile and waves.
Max Thorn eyes the vehicle.
Malta peeps confidently.
Sam Spade: "…Yeah, Malta, that's right!"
The car comes around, and comes around, and thaaat is a limo, black but gleaming in the rising sun.
It pulls up to the party.
Jack Layfield: "Stylin' ride."
Tim facepalms.
Tim: "I TOLD him we were just fine walking…"
Sam Spade: "So that's not-"
Max Thorn: "…'him' being…?"
Anna Tommize: "H-hello Ma'am."
Sam Spade lets a shaky breath out. Not that she's scared of Mrs. Layfield.
Anna Tommize: "Him is…p-probably my brother, Luther."
Out of the driver's seat emerges…is that a yellow ursaring?
Anna Tommize: "And that's his Ampharos."
It is the beefiest ampharos the party has ever seen.
Anna Tommize starts chewing on her tongue.
It looms over the party for a moment, staring down through shades as if assessing their worthiness to exist.
Anna Tommize: "H-Hey."
Esme clicks her pokedex.
Anna Tommize steps over and starts rubbing its belly.
Jack Layfield: "Dude, sunglasses in a dark limo?"
Max Thorn effects a look of polite indifference.
Meeps yips and tackles Anna's butt like a jealous dog.
Jack narrows his eyes.
Anna Tommize: "Eek! A-ah, ah'm sorry…I-I mean, I'm sorry."
Pokedex: "Ampharos. The tip of its tail shines so brightly it can be used to send sea-navigation beacons to distinct foreign shores."
Anna Tommize kneels down and pets Meeps.
Sam Spade: "That's pretty bright."
Max Thorn does, however, give the ampharos a thorough once-over.
Esme: "Very."
Max Thorn rolled up 5d6: 20 (20) (Pokemon Ed)
The ampharos hooks its tail through the limo's passenger door handle, and opens the door.
Max Thorn involuntarily vents a low whistle.
Anna Tommize gulps and forces herself to stand up straight and regard the Limo.
Sam Spade: "Impressive, I take it?"
Max Thorn: "Let's just say that the fella doesn't afraid of anything and leave it at that."
Anna Tommize: "H-he's actually really gentle…"
Anna Tommize smiles a bit at the giant bear of an Ampharos.
Jack Layfield: "Woah."
From the limo comes…same shade of hair and skin as Anna, almost certainly a relative, but confident and self-assured, almost the opposite of Anna, smiling in his sharply pressed black business suit. He scans the group, then takes a sweeping bow to Esme. "Ah, Esme. Veuillez accepter mon invitation a la ville de l'electricite!"
Max Thorn: "Just so long as you don't threaten his human, at least."
Sandy pops out of it's pokeball to see what all the commotion is.
Esme looks slightly taken aback.
Esme: "Ah, mais oui bien sur, monsieur."
SuitedMan: "Tres bien, merci."
The man stands aside, gesturing into the limo.
Jack Layfield: "And who are you, bro?"
Anna Tommize: "T-this is Luther, my elder brother."
Anna Tommize nods.
Sam Spade: "Luthor Tommize."
Anna Tommize: "Hello Luther."
Sam Spade: "Hey, Luther."
The man peers at Jack for a moment, then smiles. "'Bro'? You mean 'bro-in-law'? Annaaa! You didn't tell me you were getting engaged!"
Max Thorn bows. "Pleasure to meet you, Monsieur Tommize."
Sam Spade rolls her eyes at Luther.
Anna Tommize: "A-ah!? N-no it's n-noot like that…"
Anna Tommize: "I-I mean, no, dear brother, I am not presently engaged in any trysts."
Sam Spade: "Come on, Luther. He asked who you were, if he thought he was your brother in law, he wouldn't have needed to ask."
Jack Layfield: "The hell are you talking about bro."
Sam Spade: "And here you look so much sharper than you used to…"
Max Thorn: "I am Maximilien Thorn, pokemon professor in training."
Sam Spade sighs
Anna Tommize: "T-this young man is merely a friend. His 'bros' are a-a form of slang…"
Anna Tommize grabs Jack's shoulder and squeezes.
Luther chuckles. "I'm just messing with you! Luther Oslo Tommize. And you've been taking care of my sister?"
Anna Tommize: "He has…assured me…he will behave in front of mother."
Jack Layfield: "I'm Jack Layfield, and I thi-OW!"
Luther gives Anna a one-armed hug.
Anna Tommize looks at Jack with a look of pure terror in her eyes.
Anna Tommize: "Aah? O-Oh…"
Anna Tommize gulps and returns the hug.
Anna Tommize: "T-thank, dear brother…"
Anna Tommize: "Er, thank you…"
Esme tilts her head. She can definitely see the resemblance, and yet…
Luther shakes his head. "Look, I know you're trying, sis, but relax. Mom doesn't have any active cameras out here. You can save the stiff until we're in front of her."
Anna Tommize exhales visibly.
Anna Tommize: "Ohthankgod"
Jack Layfield: "Active cameras? Your parents spy on you? That's most heinous."
Anna Tommize: "I…I broke her tank."
Anna Tommize looks up at her brother.
Anna Tommize: "Help"
Luther raises an eyebrow. "So that WAS you."
Anna Tommize: "Help"
Luther: "They told me you hit with the force of a Legendary."
Jack Layfield: "All of us. Because Layfields clean up their messes bro."
Sam Spade: "Well, the Layfields said it'd be okay…"
Sam Spade: "…If it was us."
Anna Tommize: "The Layfields don't…"
Max Thorn coughs. "Wasn't her."
Sam Spade looks at Luther.
Anna Tommize: "Look, Oslo…"
Sam Spade: "Is your mother planning on sending us…"
Anna Tommize: "You know you're the one she l-listens to…"
Max Thorn: "But you won't believe me if I try to explain what actually happened, I don't think."
Sam Spade bites her lip.
Luther sighs and shakes his head. "C'mon, get in. Apparently SOMEONE…" He glances at Tim. Even through shades, the glance seems a bit cold. "…decided to get Jaeger's eggheads in my ci-err, in Wirehold." He sighs again. "Without consultation."
Anna Tommize: "Sorry Oslo…"
Anna Tommize climbs in.
Tim: "We don't need permission."
Anna Tommize: "No, but it's nice to seek it…"
Sam Spade: "Especially when you're looking for help."
Luther stiffens up. "No! Err, just, scheduling, venue, you know, give us time to PLAN the event!"
Esme raises her hand. "I will note that though I'm speaking at that assembly, I had nothing to do with it." She scoots into the limo.
Luther: "I just finished arranging the catering on the drive up here."
Anna Tommize: "Who's doing? 'Taste of Ho-enn'?"
Max Thorn hops into the limo as well.
Anna Tommize has a slight glimmer in her eyes.
Luther gets in after the rest of the party boards, then Luther's ampharos returns to the driver's seat and gets in gear, pulling an obviously practiced 5-point U-turn to get the limo pointed back toward Wirehold first.
Sam Spade: "…Your ampharos has some nice driving skills."
Luther: "Yeah! They're still around, and they do a good job. I wonder how authentic the cuisine is, but so long as they keep everyone fed."
Anna Tommize: "Mom l-likes it that way…"
Jack Layfield: "Your mom seems totally uptight."
Anna Tommize: "No, she's just…"
Anna Tommize: "P-precise."
Luther: "Yeah…I might not be a traditional pokemon trainer, but trust me, me and Rep have been through a lot."
Anna Tommize: "Like, she likes clocks and engines and machines."
Anna Tommize: "She's not bad, she's just…"
Sam Spade: "Mostly because they do what they're told, and nothing else."
Sam Spade: "I'm sorry, that was rude of me."
Esme: "Hah! You'd think that."
Anna Tommize: "Look, it's not that bad, OK?"
Anna Tommize: "P-please be careful what you say…"
Luther: "Also correct. Heh, word is she only fell for dad because he was predictable."
Jack Layfield: "…."
Jack does not like what he's hearing. At all.
Luther: "Sooo." Luther grins. "How's my sis been treating you?"
Anna Tommize: "We, uh…"
Anna Tommize: "We split up."
Luther: "I KNOW that. I was asking THEM."
Anna Tommize goes white.
Anna Tommize: "O-oh, OK…"
Luther pats Anna on the head and musses her hair.
Sam Spade: "She's good!"
Anna Tommize: "Nyeep!"
Sam Spade: "Anna's always helpful."
Luther: "She tell you why she wears her Mears yet?"
Jack Layfield: "She's quirky and fun."
Max Thorn: "She's been a good kid."
Anna Tommize: "Luther!"
Anna Tommize makes an oh-god-It's-coming face.
Anna Tommize: "W-wavs are real!"
Esme: "They are. Sort of."
Sam Spade: "Heh. That's not the interesting question."
Sam Spade: "The interesting question is what happens when she takes them off…"
Anna Tommize: "N-noo…"
Anna Tommize: "Please dun't…"
Luther lowers his shades for a moment, suddenly serious. "She's taken them off? Do tell."
Sam Spade looks at Anna.
Anna Tommize: "G-guys!"
Sam Spade opens her mouth, but says nothing, then closes her mouth again.
Anna Tommize: "D-don't tell Mom, ok…?"
Sam Spade: "…My lips are sealed, Luther. Sorry."
Anna Tommize: "I, uh…I was in the hospital."
Luther: "WHAT?!?"
Anna Tommize: "T-the doctors said it was, err…"
Anna Tommize: "'Psychic sensitivity overload', they said…"
Luther: "…"
Anna Tommize curls up.
Esme pats Anna.
Luther winces, then remembers to put his shades back in place.
Luther: "So now they think you're one of those Sandbar people."
Anna Tommize: "I'm just like…"
Anna Tommize: "I'm like grandma, aren't I?"
Anna Tommize: "I'm gonna go crazy…"
Tim bristles a bit, but says nothing.
Anna Tommize curls up.
Jack Layfield: "You're not going to go crazy Anna."
Sam Spade: "Bah."
Sam Spade: "You found Team Derp for us."
Sam Spade: "So you're not crazy."
Anna Tommize frowns.
Luther: "'Team Derp'?"
Esme: "Having some sensitivity to occult phenomena doesn't simply make one crazy, mon amie."
Anna Tommize: "I'm not psychic…"
Anna Tommize: "I'm not!"
Esme: "Did you forget about our 'friend' you noticed?"
Sam Spade: "They have some other name for themself. Stormcloud or something."
Jack Layfield: "I though it was Team So Loud?"
Luther: "Oh, those guys. Mom seemed really interested in their engine."
Luther: "Not many airships like that."
Anna Tommize: "I-I tried to grab it, but by the time I was released it was gone…"
Sam Spade: "Yeah, well, Anna's the one who pointed out the direction to where we could find their factory."
Anna Tommize: "I-I was hoping to make up for the tank…"
Luther smiles. "I think she's forgotten about the tank. Mostly."
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "O-OK…"
Anna Tommize: "I think it was Lugia who did it."
Anna Tommize: "I-If it matters…"
Luther: "…"
Luther: "…did…you say, Lugia?"
Anna Tommize: "Yeah. I talked to them back around the Ice Cove…"
Esme: "Yes, but it would be wise to not bring attention to our 'friend'."
Anna Tommize: "Esme was there."
Anna Tommize: "…?"
Esme looks out the window towards the coast.
Anna Tommize: "They're not our friend any more."
Esme: "Still insisting on that?"
Jack Layfield: "Big wave came out of the sea and smashed it. That's about it."
Anna Tommize: "…"
Anna Tommize: "Hmmph."
Anna Tommize: "I bet it's their fault Sherman went crazy."
Luther: "Hmm. That…hmm."
Anna Tommize: "T't'give them an excuse."
Luther: "If there's a Lugia active…"
Anna Tommize: "T-there's also a, e-erm, a Mizzinger…"
Anna Tommize: "Miss-ing…"
Anna Tommize: "…Y'know."
Luther: "…heh. Heh heh. THAT would explain it."
Anna Tommize: "Oslo? You're acting scary…"
Anna Tommize frowns.
Luther tenses up. "Er? S-sorry."
Anna Tommize frowns.
Sam Spade: "Um. No offense, I'd just like to make sure of something."
Anna Tommize: "…?"
Sam Spade pokes Luther lightly with a finger.
Anna Tommize freezes, and her gaze slowly shifts to Rep.
Luther seems solid enough.
Esme: "Explain what?"
Sam Spade: "Okay, just making sure."
Rep is definitely monitoring the rear view mirror, which gives a good view of the passenger compartment.
Jack Layfield: "Okaaaaaaaay."
Sam Spade: "Right, right."
Luther: "Ahem. So, yeah, inventor and philanthropist by day, mad scientist by night. I've been trying to build some wave powered supplements to our main power station, but it's like the ocean's just been TOYING with me!"
Sam Spade: "Ahhhhhh."
Luther: "If there's a Lugia around, that's probably actually what's been happening."
Luther: "Because, you know. Water isn't sentient. Pokemon are."
Sam Spade: "Yeah, that does make sense."
Anna Tommize: "O-oh…"
Anna Tommize: "W-well, yeah, Wavs've been, err…"
Luther sighs. "Now I need to find out what Lugia's problem is. But that's for later."
Anna Tommize shrinks for a second.
Anna Tommize: "N-nevermind…"
Anna Tommize: "Esme thinks I'm special…"
Esme: "From what I could tell, it wanted to be left alone, mostly."
Esme: "You are!"
Luther: "You are!"
Anna Tommize: "I dunno…"
Luther: "I've only got two sisters, and the other one's nothing like you."
Anna Tommize looks down.
Anna Tommize: "T-thanks…"
Anna Tommize fiddles with one of her Mears.
Sam Spade raises an eyebrow.
The limo passes through city limits.
Luther: "Alright, here we are! Welcome to Wirehold!"
Anna Tommize winces.
Anna Tommize: "A-alright."
Jack rolls down a window, sticks his head out, and takes in the sights.
All around are metal buildings - most from Foundry Town, no doubt.
Wires line the streets and lay overhead. Everywhere are lights - most turned off during the day.
Every street corner has a marked "Fast Underwalk" entrance, apparently a local form of mass transit. Overbuilt for the number of people, though.
There are several blocks of stores selling electronics of many varieties. One block-long storefront apparently specializes in different types of pokedexes.
[OOC] WC GM: Insert Akihabara vibe here, basically.
Jack Layfield: "I wonder if you could grind a skateboard on some of those wires?"
Max Thorn: "I wouldn't."
Anna Tommize: "That's a bad idea…"
Anna Tommize: "Licking a power line is one thing, b-but boarding one is…"
Sam Spade: "Not nearly as bad?"
Luther: "I know some people have been playing with hoverboards, that ONLY work on those wires. They're a public nuisance, but we let them off with warnings unless they cause a problem."
Sam Spade: "Don't touch the line and anything else, and be prepared to fall a lot while stunned."
Sam Spade: "…Which sounds extra dangerous, so I wouldn't recommend doing it."
Sam Spade: "…The hoverboard…would…be…less so…I think."
Luther: "Got it in one. It's not so much the danger to themselves, as if they fall on random bystanders."
Anna Tommize: "Aah…"
Max Thorn: "So basically only do it if you have a safety harness attached to a rope attached to a pokemon big enough to support you if you fall."
Jack Layfield: "Radical."
Jack Layfield: "I gotta try that."
Before long, the limo comes to a halt in front of the largest building around, three stories tall with a gothic-style front, save for transparent columns with electricity crackling through them and a giant stylized pokeball symbol on the overhanging roof. This, there can be no doubt, is a pokemon gym.
Rep gets out and opens the door, but Luther holds up a hand. "Wait a minute."
Esme: "Neat!"
Luther sets a timer on his wristwatch.
Jack Layfield: "The heck is that for?"
Anna Tommize: "…We need to be on time."
Luther smiles. "I think you'll approve. Thirty, twenty nine…let's get out in just over twenty five seconds."
Anna Tommize: "Alright."
Anna Tommize nods.
Sam Spade: "…Huh."
Sam Spade: "…I'm expecting…but no…"
Before long, the timer goes off. Luther nods. "NOW let's get out."
Anna Tommize gets out, doing her best to look graceful and non-rushed.
Sam Spade hops out behind Anna. She is calm, at peace, and not tense at all. Why would she be?
As the party exits, the front door of the gym SLAMS open, revealing a frazzle-haired (with a white streak) aged woman, her left eyelid twitching and her expression generally not amused. "You are. Sixty. Seconds. LATE!"
Anna Tommize: "I-I apologize, mother."
Luther winks mischievously at Jack as he exits the limo.
Anna Tommize: "It is nice to see you, again."
Anna Tommize looks at Luther with a "What are you DOING?" look in her eyes.
Sam Spade: "Yeah. Nice to see you again, Mrs. Tommize."
Max Thorn bows. "It is an honor to meet you, Madame Tommize. I am Max Thorn, pokemon professor in training."
Jack appears to be stewing and trying to stop himself from saying something,
Luther: "Ladies, gentlemen, and pokemon, may I introduce the Wirehold gym leader and queen of Amoda's power plant, Fran Tommize!"
Anna Tommize places a hand on Jack's shoulder.
Malta cheeps derisively.
Sam Spade glares at Malta for the exact amount of time it would take to indicate she did not approve of that.
Fran: "Come in, we'll make up time on the tour." She steps back into the gym.
Max Thorn follows in.
Jack grits his teeth. Sandy, noticing her trainer's reaction, clambers up his shoulder and nudges his head. Reluctantly, Jack follows.
Sam Spade claps Jack's shoulder and grins easily.
Fran barely waits for the party to fully enter before launching into her speil. "I will assume Anna has told you very little about her home. This facility powers most of Amoda." She gestures to a large bank of turbines and capacitors to the left, and a control room with a map of Amoda on the right.
Anna Tommize winces.
The control room is primarily staffed by humans in uniform, though a few of the workers seem to be humanoid pokemon - in the same uniform, doing the same jobs.
Jack Layfield: "I can in fact recognize a power plant when I see one."
Jack is not speaking in slang. That isn't a good sign.
Between these front rooms is a security station, manned by a machoke with a gun belt holding four pistols. It nods at Fran and the party, and pushes a button to retract the thick glass door leading further inside. Fran walks in without waiting for the door to open, barely missing it.
Anna Tommize continues in lockstep with her brother.
Sam Spade follows quietly.
Fran: "Good. The inner workings are off limits, but the Source room is beneath our feet. Quarters and storage are over there…" Fran nods to the left, where a pot-bellied man and a slightly husky ampharos can be seen napping on a couch, back to back. "…as is my husband."
Fran: "You'll have to excuse the poor dear. This is not one of his scheduled naps, but recently we have had an…incident."
Esme: "Ah, the source!"
Jack Layfield: "Incident?"
Sam Spade: "What kind of incident?"
Max Thorn lifts an eyebrow.
Fran: "I've never seen anything like it. A joltik just hopped onto the back of his neck, bit, and…the doctors think it tried to drink. I chased the joltik away, and the doctors say he'll be fine with a bit more rest than usual. Can you imagine?"
Anna Tommize: "…Huh…"
Anna Tommize: "J-Joltik?"
Sam Spade: "…It must have come with the engine."
Esme: "Most likely."
Sam Spade: "Team D- Team Stormcloud was training them, I think, and raising them to attack people."
Max Thorn nudges Sam. "…Isn't that what happened to those Team Derp fellas you were looking at with Officer Jenny?"
Fran: "Yes, that does seem to be where it came from. It is back here." Fran leads the way further back, opening a door to a pokemon arena.
Sam Spade: "…Maybe the were hiding in the engine, or maybe they were trying to cause a distraction so they could steal it back…?"
The arena is currently occupied by the wreckage of the airship engine. A small team of technicians is examining parts of it, being directed by an ampharos wearing a hologram visor.
Max Thorn: "Or they're trying to mind-control people via some sort of Dracula-esque thing."
Max Thorn: "We do know that humans produce one joule of energy per second, after all."
Sam Spade: "That's a horrifying, horrifying thought."
Fran: "Sensor! Status?"
Jack Layfield: "Oh just what we need. Team Some Wow messing about again."
Anna Tommize: "…Huh…"
Anna Tommize: "An…arena?"
Anna Tommize: "Mom, is this…Ah, I mean, Mother."
The visored ampharos gestures in the air, and words form. "YOU ARE LATE BY FORTY SECONDS. THIS IS UNLIKE YOU. I AM WORRIED."
Anna Tommize: "Is this a recent installation?"
Fran smiles. "Unavoidable. But I meant our study."
Esme claps her hands together. "Translation!"
Anna Tommize: "H-hello, Sensor…"
Anna Tommize: "…"
Anna Tommize puts a palm to her face.
Jack Layfield: "Okay this is ridiculous."
Fran: "Yes, this is new since you left. I had been thinking of having it built, so when we needed a place to study this…"
Anna Tommize: "Ah!"
Luther is mirroring Anna's facepalm.
Anna Tommize straightens up when addressed.
Tim: "Who builds a pokemon arena just to use it as a garage?"
Anna Tommize: "Mother is…efficiently minded with her space."
Luther sighs. "And now you meet the true Fran."
Max Thorn: "The only unitasker my mother has in her kitchen is a fire extinguisher."
Anna Tommize: "What are you going to do about gym challenges?"
Fran: "That depends. What gym challen-"
Luther: "MOTHER!"
Esme waves.
Fran scowls at Luther. "You. Will. Not. Address. Me. In. That. Tone."
Jack Layfield: "Sure, he won't. I WILL!"
Jack Layfield: "I HAVE HAD IT TODAY!"
Anna Tommize very, very, carefully does not react.
Anna Tommize: "…"
Luther wispers to Jack, "Thank you," then steps back.
Max Thorn steps back, too.
Meeps baa's aggressively. Anna puts a hand on it, and it stops.
Max Thorn … is still behind Jack, though.
Jack Layfield: "But hey, I'm a Layfield, we're forgiving, so water under the bridge and all that. But, BUT."
Anna Tommize puts a hand on Jack's shoulder.
Anna Tommize: "Please…"
Anna Tommize: "Restrain yourself."
Anna Tommize: "It would please me, thank you kindly."
Anna Tommize trembles slightly.
Anna Tommize winces.
Sam Spade coughs.
Anna Tommize steps back and exhales.
Jack is too far gone to slow down now. It's that famous Layfield temper.
Fran: "Is that all?"
Anna Tommize: "I think he wishes to offer you a gym challenge, ma'am.
Anna Tommize pales at the word 'junk'.
Anna Tommize: "Luther…w-would it be wise for me to excuse myself?"
Fran: "Really? You would put a gym challenge over advancing the state of science? Over understanding this new marvel?"
Anna Tommize is somewhat conspicuous as her eyes flit between her mother, and the door.
Luther shakes his head. "Unfortunately, you're one of the challengers, so you need to be here."
Anna Tommize: "…O-oh…"
Anna Tommize looks up at Sensor.
Anna Tommize widens her eyes.
Jack Layfield: "You take a job, you DO THE DAMN JOB. That's the Layfield way. I didn't think a Tommize would be a chicken."
Anna Tommize: "Oh…."
Sensor is fully absorbed in the study.
Anna Tommize: "If she uses Sensor though…"
Anna Tommize gulps.
Sam Spade: "What's up, Anna?"
Anna Tommize: "A-ah, I'm…"
Anna Tommize: "I mean, ah, I am fine."
Anna Tommize is clearly terrified.
Anna Tommize: "I am only concerned for Jack's ability to win, contingent on my m-mother's choice of pokemon."
Max Thorn: "We could all go in on it. Done that before."
Sandile is just as ready to fight as Jack is, her jaws snapping in excitement.
Fran: "Hmm. You would not be willing to wait until the arena is free? I mean, we'll have an hour before the next project I'd like to use it for, that should be eno-"
The lights cut out.
After a second, red lights come on. Security klaxons blare.
Sam Spade: "Malta! Eyes high!"
Sam Spade: "Looks like the Joltik was trying to set up a break-in after all."
Esme: "This tour is proving quite eventful, oui?"
Max Thorn: "Antheia, some Fairy Lights, please." Three ghostly flames appear, adding some green-blue to the red of the emergency lights.
Sensor's hologram-words blaze in the darkness. "SOURCE BREACHED. SOURCE ESCAPING."
Anna Tommize: "…!"
Jack Layfield: "Escaping? How can a source…. "
Max Thorn: "…Lead on."
Anna Tommize: "Oslo, should we guard the exit?"
Luther: "Seriously? Arrgh - mom, this is EXACTLY why I set up those reserves!"
Fran: "I don't…but…"
Anna Tommize takes a step backwards to the door.
Luther: "Mom, you and Sensor need to be in the control room. I'll get the Source!"
Sam Spade: "We'll back you up, Luther!"
Sam Spade: "Come on!"
Fran: "…alright, you're right. Sensor!" Fran runs for the control room, followed by her ampharos.
Anna Tommize falls in line.
Luther runs off to the right, slamming his open hand on a palm sensor. The sensor glows briefly, then the wall drops away, revealing stairs. "Come on!"
Esme sprints after Luther. A first-hand account would do better than asking, anyway.
Jack rushes after Luther, leaping down the stairway.
Luther: "Anna, mom never told you what's down here, did she?"
Anna Tommize: "Ah..?"
Anna Tommize: "N-no, I never felt it was smart to…"
Anna Tommize: "I-I mean, she didn't seem to want to be bothered, so…"
The stairs lead down, to a cavernous room with metal columns, the bottom not yet visible. A few porygon can be seen, bobbing about.
Max Thorn follows Luther.
Luther: "Then I'm sorry you get to find out this way. The rest of you, this is SECRET, you got it? Though it might not be secret much longer."
Esme: "Oh hey!"
Max Thorn: "Mum's the word."
Anna Tommize nods.
Jack Layfield: "What is it?"
The room is so large, the stairs only reach one bend before the end is in sight, though other stairs down can be seen - apparently there are multiple access points. The poles are mostly nondescript, though they have propeller-like flange-rings every so often, like the poles that movies about old times would have slaves pushing to power some giant mill or contraption.
As the party descends, more and more porygon can be seen - and a breach in one side, at which various other pokemon, including a bunch of emolga, are ushering the porygon out.
Although in many cases, it is not so much "ushering" as "shoving" , though the porygon do not resist.
Anna Tommize: "…Porygon…?"
Anna Tommize stands to block their exit up the stairs.
Esme: "Ooooh. That would explain why Mr. Layfield told me to ask your mom about the source."
Sam Spade: "Emolga. Are they yours? Or are they Derps?"
Sam Spade yells out.
Luther: "Not ours. Rep, check the nursery!"
Anna Tommize exhales.
Luther: "The rest of you, think you can block up that hole?"
Anna Tommize: "Meeps. Growl."
Sam Spade: "Malta, disrupt them!"
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Growl is a burst attack.
It takes a bit of weaving to get through the porygon, but as the party nears the breach, Team Stormcloud's pokemon break and run!
Jack Layfield: "Are you sure it's team Stormcloud? I thought it was Team Steamplow?"
Max Thorn releases Nootaikok. "Nootaikok, freeze them with some Powder Snow!"
Esme: "Doesn't seem like they want a repeat of last time."
Max Thorn rolled up 1d20 2d6+20: 4 (4), 29 (29) (AC 2, Freeze on 19+)
Jack Layfield: "Sandy, chase them down!"
The snow dusts the ground.
Anna Tommize: "…Meeps, thunderwave."
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize looks down towards team Stormcloud. Are there humans in range?
Anna sees no humans down here, other than those Anna brought with her just now.
Anna Tommize: "…We should find the trainers…"
Anna Tommize: "Oslo. Do we have camera access down here?"
Luther: "Only inside. We can review footage later."
Anna Tommize: "Alright."
Anna Tommize: "So, for now then…"
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "F-for mother, we must fight, huh?"
The emolga hoof it, tossing porygon behind them to distract trainers and pokemon.
Luther: "Just get the porygons back!"
Sam Spade: "Come on, then!"
Max Thorn runs after the emolgas.
Anna Tommize doesn't fully seem to register the command and starts working her way to the Emolga.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Are they close enough to catch in a burst-1?
[OOC] WC GM: They've been shifting away at maximum speed. Chasing them outside?
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Yeah.
[OOC] Max Thorn: Quite.
[OOC] Sam Spade: Running with Anna and Max.
Jack follows the rest of the group
Outside the room leads to a large tunnel. A short distance in, a series of demolition charges line the roof for twenty meters' length, wired to a plunger on the far side manned by a familiar pichu.
The pichu spies the group and wags its finger.
Anna Tommize: "Oslo! They've set charges!"
Luther: "Charges?"
Esme lags a little behind, directing the Porygon back towards the previous room.
Luther: "What for?"
Max Thorn: "To bring the tunnel down. Obviously."
Anna Tommize: "Dunno but they're all over the maintenance tunnel."
Anna Tommize exhales.
Anna Tommize: "Meeps, reflect."
Sam Spade: "Malta, distract that Pichu! Quick Attack!"
[OOC] Anna Tommize: I assume the move resolves?
Max Thorn: "Blow that guy away from the detonator, Antheia! Use all of the lights!"
[OOC] WC GM: 20 meters away. Too far for Quick Attack.
Max Thorn rolled up 4#1d20 4#2d8+21: 9 13 19 9 (50), 27 27 30 29 (113)
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Actually hold on, with the reflect…I have an idea
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Tackle has the push keyword.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: A full shift + tackle's dash range may be enough?
[OOC] WC GM: Doesn't seem like it would be.
[OOC] WC GM: Unless you're targeting the explosives. Those are in range.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Yeah…
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Checking movement rules please h/o
[OOC] WC GM: Just roll it.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: The tackle?
[OOC] WC GM: Yeah
Anna Tommize rolled up 1d20: 6 (6) (AC2)
[OOC] Max Thorn: actually it occurs to me that if Antheia were to ride Meeps's Tackle…it'd put her in range to do what I'm aiming for.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Ooh, 20 meters is way too far
[OOC] Max Thorn: Particularly since expending the Fairy Lights to use Fairy Wind is a Free Action.
[OOC] Anna Tommize: Oh? Do that, then.
The pichu jumps to land full weight on the detonator, but Antheia's wind messes up the landing. The timing was for the emolga to just clear the blast, porygon in tow - but Meeps knocks the charges forward. They still detonate, but over the emolga, collapsing the tunnel in front of the porygon.
Meeps turns around and pulls itself onto two legs, glaring down at the mass of Porygon's. "Who's next?" , it seems to ask.
Max Thorn: "Phew."
Sam Spade: "That…"
Max Thorn: "Was awesome? Yes."
Sam Spade: "Max, you know pokemon better than anyone I've met."
Max Thorn: "Was dangerous? Also yes."
Sam Spade: "Was that the same pichu?"
Esme: "Great job!"
Max Thorn: "I'm pretty sure it was, yes."
Esme feels motion in her backpack.
[OOC] Jack Layfield: Ack, sorry, had to be AFK for a bit
Anna Tommize: "Grr…"
The porygon in the tunnel just mill around.
Esme: "Hm? Gervy?"
Anna Tommize runs to the end of the tunnel and starts digging her way through.
Jack Layfield: "The heck is going on?"
Max Thorn: "Y'know that Team Derpischord pichu we let get away back in Foundry Town?"
Gervais pokes his head out through the side of the bag, but then simply hops out.
Esme: "That pichu sucks."
Esme still feels motion from her backpack, sans Gervais.
Max Thorn: "Sandy? Want to try and dig that emolga out for questioning?"
Anna Tommize quickly realizes she isn't making significant progress through the rubble and just rests her head against it.
Anna Tommize: "Dammit…"
Jack Layfield: "Won't it just tell us 'Emolga Emolga'?"
Sandy: "Sandile Sand."
Esme: "Huh. Oh! OH!" She places her bag down and unzips the top, crouching next to it expectantly.
Max Thorn: "Madame Tommize has translation capability."
Max Thorn: "… Is that porygon egg hatching?"
Sam Spade: "Yeah. At least for Sensor."
Sure enough, Esme's egg is cracked and wobbling.
Max Thorn walks over and crouches next to it, too. There's room for a few more people to crowd around.
Jack runs over, this'll be excellent.
Sam Spade takes one of those spots.
Crack, crack, CRUNCH! And a porygon emerges.
Sam Spade: "Whoa!"
Esme perks. "Ah-Don't worry Anna, we'll probably run into them again. …Unfortunately. Come look at-HEEEEE!"
The egg shell morphs into skin for the porygon.
Anna Tommize blinks.
Max Thorn: "… Huh. I didn't think that was the standard practice for porygon."
As one, all the other porygon - in the tunnel and in the room - stop and turn to look at the newcomer, or in its direction.
Esme: "It really isn't, if these others are examples of the standard."
Jack Layfield: "WHOAAAAAA."
Jack's mind is blown.
The other porygon begin to softly chant, "Pooo ry. Pooo ry. Pooo ry."
Anna Tommize drags herself out of the tunnel to join the group.
Anna Tommize: "W-waa…?"
Max Thorn: "Have a name in mind?"
A speaker crackles with Fran's voice. "What's going on down there? Production just dropped to zero!"
Sam Spade: "I think maybe the porygon messiah just hatched?"
Esme: "Mmm. Lucrece." She boops it on the nose.
Max Thorn examines it thoroughly to see if there's anything else special about it…
Max Thorn rolled up 5d6: 15 (15)
Lucrèce spins in place from the 'boop', before bumping into Esme affectionately.
Max Thorn: "I… I don't know how you managed it, but it's…shiny and yet not. Simultaneously. And the other porygon are praying."
Porygons: "Pooo ry. Pooo ry. Pooo ry."
Esme: "Hee~!"
Esme: "Wait, praying?"
Anna Tommize: "Ah! M-Mom!"
Max Thorn: "Praying is a thing that is Not Done by pokemon. Ever."
Anna Tommize rushes back into the hall to try and find Oslo.
Luther: "Anna! Did you stop them?"
Jack Layfield: "Okay this is weird to the max."
Anna Tommize: "Y-yeah, they're gone, but we have a problem!"
Max Thorn eyes Jack. "Was that intentional?"
Luther: "I know! They took the nursery!"
Anna Tommize: "M-my friend made a porygon egg a-and all the porygon stopped doing w-whatever it is they do…"
Luther looks around.
Anna Tommize: "A-and Mom is saying production stopped!"
Anna Tommize: "She's gonna kill us!"
Luther: "…okay, that's a more immediate problem."
Anna Tommize: "Yeah!"
Luther: "Something's disrupting the porygons." He looks around, and traces their stares. "…are your friends doing something?"
Anna Tommize: "My friend made a porygon egg and it just hatched…"
Jack Layfield: "Not really?"
Anna Tommize: "A-and they're acting weird…"
Esme helps Lucrece levitate up, and starts gently scooting them back towards the hall. "Come on now…and Gervy, stop pouting, you're still mon petit chou."
Gervais snorts.
Sam Spade: "Come on. There's no reason for us to be in this cold tunnel that's probably not going to last long."
The porygon in the tunnel follow Esme back inside.
Tim just stares. "What…"
Max Thorn heads on back wit the others, seemingly lost in thought.
Tim: "That porygon…"
Sam Spade: "Yes?"
Max Thorn: "I don't care what the other porygon think, that is *not* the Second Coming of Arceus."
Tim looks away, covering his eyes. "G-get it in a pokeball!"
Sam Spade: "It seems that Tim disagrees."
Jack Layfield: "Oh boy, This is just the weirdest day."
Sam Spade: "…Though the Porygon seem able to see it through walls…and it's affecting Tim oddly."
Sam Spade: "Malta, what do you think?"
Max Thorn: "Do you need a pokeball, Esme?"
Esme: "It just got out of an egg, it can go in one later." She pets her new, though strange, team member.
Anna Tommize: "…What's it so…"
Anna Tommize: "Wavvy…"
Esme: "I actually have an extra, though I don't know where I got it…"
Anna Tommize: "Oooh…"
Anna Tommize reaches out to touch it.
Anna Tommize: "Esme what the hell'd you dooo…."
Max Thorn: "Probably materialized when Lucrece hatched."
Meeps bonks Anna side-on and brings her back to reality.
Luther: "If it's affecting all the porygons…can you get it upstairs, away from them?"
Lucrèce raises its head towards Anna's hand, but slumps down when she's bumped out of the way.
Esme: "Fine, fine… In you go, Luc." She taps it on the head with a spare ball.
Anna Tommize: "Esme…t-that thing is…"
Anna Tommize: "Wavvy…"
Anna Tommize blinks a few times.
Anna Tommize: "M-make sure it behaves, OK?"
The moment Lucrece is in its ball, the porygons lose interest and resume milling around.
Luther: "I'll round up the strays and get the wall patched. Can you go back upstairs, please?"
Anna Tommize nods and heads back.
Sam Spade: "…Yeah…"
Jack Layfield: "So do the porygon power the plant?"
Max Thorn: :heads on up.
Luther: "They do."
Luther: "Remember! Secret!"
Max Thorn heads on up, too.
Anna Tommize: "Really? B-but they're not electric…"
Max Thorn: "They're digital, and hence have an affinity."
Sam Spade follows.
Jack Layfield: "That's a bit of a shortcut, isn't it? Using pokemon instead of making power the hard way?"
Max Thorn: "Define 'the hard way'. Because if you mean digging into the soil for resources, there's just no reason for that."
Esme: "Well, a lot of industries do that, don't they?"
Max Thorn: "They don't burn it for fuel like we used to before we learned how to harness electric-types."
Jack Layfield: "Fair enough. Still weird."
Sam Spade: "Kinda…odd, I have to admit."
Sam Spade: "I mean…it looked like-"
Sam Spade spots the end of the stairway.
Sam Spade: "Ah, well. Secret, and all that."
Anna Tommize: "…Esme, please b-be careful with that Porygon…"
Esme: "Mmm? You worried, Anna?"
Upstairs, there is a frenzy of activity in the control room. Fran is standing back from it, but Sensor is in the middle, sending missives left and right.
Sam Spade: "Excuse me, Sensor? Is something wrong?"
Fran looks as Sam speaks up. "Please don't interrupt her; she's busy."
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "Th-there was an intrusion, mother. The same group as the airship."
Fran: "We'll have full power restored soon. Ah…I don't want to pump my boy's head any bigger, but if he hadn't insisted on installing battery backups that would have gone a lot worse."
Jack Layfield: "The emergency cut me off mid stream, but I still mean what I said lady."
Fran: "Yes, yes, perhaps you're right. If there's a silver lining to this crisis, there is no question there is now a suitable gym challenge."
Anna Tommize: "…Eh?"
Anna Tommize exhales visibly.
Anna Tommize: "S-so, we won't need to fight Sensor…?"
Fran: "Apparently those thieves made off with the nursery." She scowls, colder than Ice Cove. "Get. It. Back."
Anna Tommize straightens.
Sam Spade fumes.
Anna Tommize: "Yes Ma'am."
Sam Spade: "I like this gym challenge."
Fran: "Do that and you'll have earned your Wire Badges."
Sam Spade: "…Mostly because I hate Team Derp, true."
Max Thorn: "Sure thing."
Jack Layfield: "No. I want a battle with you."
Anna Tommize flinches.
Jack Layfield: "I'll help with the idiot team, but I want a battle."
Max Thorn: "You can do that after we get the nursery back, Jack."
Anna Tommize: "J-Jack…"
Anna Tommize: "Mother p-please excuse my friend h-he doesn't know what he's a-asking for…"
Fran: "Indeed. If you can return it on time, the arena should be free just then."
Esme: "What is the nursery, exactly?"
Jack Layfield: "Fine by me. See you on the battlefield."
Anna Tommize twitches, and looks up at Sensor, terrified.
Fran: "It is the equipment I use for making…well, you saw."
Anna Tommize: "S-Sensor…?"
Sensor takes just enough time out to shoot Anna a non-friendly smile.
Anna Tommize gulps.
Anna Tommize: "Yes'm."
Esme: "Yes, I'd like to know more! I had to make due with a hijacked old storage terminal, and had…different results."
Esme: "Also, it helps for us to recover, if we have details."
Anna Tommize looks around for Luther.
Luther is still downstairs, apparently.
Fran: "Well. As Sensor has everything under control, and my plans are otherwise…interrupted…I suppose I have time now."
Fran holds her head high and saunters toward her quarters. "Come. It is story time."
Esme claps her hands together. "Great!"
[OOC] Max Thorn: Can has logend soon?
[OOC] WC GM: Was driving toward that.
[OOC] WC GM: In fact, would anyone mind right here?
Sam Spade has a small notepad out.
[OOC] Jack Layfield: I would love right here
[OOC] Sam Spade: Works for me.
[OOC] Esme: Sure thing
